Consumption in supermarkets fell 4.2% in August

In August, supermarket sales at constant prices – this is discounting the impact of inflation – added up to a total of $ 26,263.2 million, which represents a fall of 4.2% compared to August of last year. This was revealed by the survey of the sector carried out, every month, by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

Sales at current prices, during the same period, however, totaled $ 39,491.9 million, that is, the chains invoiced 26.7% more than the same month of the previous year. While inflation in that period was 34.4%.

In the gondolas, the most important falls, according to the INDEC, were in dairy products, vegetables and fruits, rotisserie products, electronics and household items. The shoppings also registered a fall in sales at constant prices of 2.6% year-on-year, reaching a total of $ 3,977.6 million.

Other private data, had already reported the fall in consumption in August. For the consultant Kantar WorldPanel, for example, the decrease averaged 2% in all channels (supermarkets, warehouses, supermarkets and wholesalers).

The retraction of mass consumption occurs in a context of lower economic activity and a very strong inflationary pressure that reached 7.2% in September. In this scenario, Finance Minister Nicol├ís Dujovne said last Tuesday that “September inflation was high, October inflation will continue to be high due to statistical drag, but we already see a clear drop in the rate of inflation”. Therefore, the official conjectured that “from November there will be a recovery of consumption and a recovery of wages.”

For the first time, the INDEC survey that was published yesterday incorporated new data in the measurement, such as the forms of payment used by consumers. Thus, it was known that 34.9% of total sales were paid in cash; 25.7%, by debit card and 32.8% was paid by credit card. While, with other means of payment, 6.5% of total sales were completed.

Also the INDEC, differentiated face-to-face sales in the chains and the sales that are made over the Internet. The first, represented -in August- 98.4% of the total. While total sales at current prices in the online channel totaled $ 639,205, representing 1.6% of total sales. Sales on the web showed a positive variation of 63.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.

From this report, in addition, the agency presented the results of the new wholesale self-service survey, which surveys sales to final consumers, using the same questionnaire that is applied in the Supermarket Survey.

The first result of this channel, showed that, in August, sales at constant prices in wholesale supermarkets fell, 2.8%, according to the official body, totaling $ 4,325 million. While sales at current prices totaled $ 6,579.2 million, representing an increase of 29.5% year-on-year.

In September, the negative trend of consumption in this channel deepened further. According to the records of the consultancy Scentia, the fall among wholesale distributors averaged 9% in the month and 2.6% year-on-year.

According to this survey, the biggest falls were recorded in impulsive purchase products, such as sweets (22.4%), in non-alcoholic beverages (15.4%) and in cleaning articles for clothes and clothing. home (12%).
